Book Notes: My Name Is Memory by Ann Brashares

My Name Is MemoryI was looking ridiculously forward to reading this book once I heard about it. The whole premise of love extending between two people throughout reincarnation really appealed to me for some reason. As soon as I started reading, I was so taken aback by how beautifully it was written. The writing, especially from Daniel's perspective, had such a poetic feeling to it. Though I loved the writing, I will say that it made it a slower read for me sometimes. The format of going back and forth between the present and the past worked well for the book because as I was eager for them to find each other in the present, learning about their past added to the suspense when finding out about the ways they were torn from each other. By the time I finished the book I sat saddened to have the book end because I wanted to know more. I hope we get to find out more about this couple in the future because if we don't, Brashares is such a tease!

Book Notes: Safe Landing by Tess Oliver

Safe Landing"Still trying to cope with her parent’s divorce, seventeen-year-old Brazil Parkin finds her world slipping even further from its once blissful orbit. She blames her mom for the rotten turn her life has taken. Leaving behind her friends, her horse, and a father she adores, Brazil moves with her mother and twin brothers to a 19th century beach house with a shady history.

Brazil is determined to remain a recluse, but an unexpected kiss, a nearly disastrous airplane landing, and the lingering spirit of a lovesick boy help open Brazil’s eyes to a world outside of her own universe."

This book was a fun, quick and easy read. I liked Brazil's character for the most part because she always had a nice pinch of sarcasm and wit to her conversations. Though at the same time, she did whine a bit too much at times. I feel like the story was more about Brazil somewhat finding herself and coming to terms with her new life, than it being a paranormal romance. I say this because there wasn't much of a love story between Sebastian, the ghost, and her. Their relationship was more about friendship. I absolutely loved Sebastian and really felt for him. He made me want to read an old 1800's love story because I loved the way he spoke. I wish people still spoke with such emotion. The only real complaints I have for this book is that the love story could've been more developed and the stories needed more closure. I felt the ending to be a bit rushed. Overall though, Oliver wrote great characters with great appeal for the reader and created a world I'd love to live in.

Book Notes: Heart on a Chain by Cindy C Bennett

Heart on a Chain"17-year-old Kate has lived her whole life in abject poverty, with an alcoholic father and drug-addicted mother, who severely abuses Kate. At school, her second-hand clothing marks her as a target. Her refusal to stand up for herself makes her the recipient of her classmates taunts and bullying. That is, until Henry returns. Henry Jamison moved away six years earlier, just as he and Kate had begun to develop feelings for one another. He returns to find the bright, funny, outgoing girl he had known now timidly hiding in corners, barely speaking to anyone around her, suspicious of even him. Kate can't figure out what game Henry is playing with her - for surely it is a game. What else would the gorgeous, popular boy from her past want with her? Kate finally decides to trust Henry's intentions, opening her heart to him. Just when it seems he might be genuine in his friendship, tragedy strikes, threatening everything Kate has worked so hard to gain. Can Henry help her to overcome this new devastation, or will it tear them apart forever?"

When I first received this book, I was kind of delaying reading it only because I didn't want to get in a totally down mood. Though this book did somewhat do that, it also mixed it in with uplifting moments, causing a lot of roller coaster high and low moments. I'm not a very emotional person, but even this book made me get teary during parts. The author did a great job at making you feel the way Kate felt. The things she goes through in life really saddened me to think people were really capable of performing some of the said acts. I've never wished bodily harm on book characters, but this book made me hope the worst things happened to them.

One of the aspects I loved about this book was that it didn't make the love story the main focus really, even though it was a main part of the story. I always remembered, "Oh my god! What's going to happen at home?" in the back of my mind. Henry really is like her Prince Charming. Really...He's so perfect, that towards the end I was almost hoping he'd show some flaw.  However, not-so-secretly I'd love to have a Henry in my life so I guess I really shouldn't complain, huh?
